Dear Dr. Arlene,

Re: Your comment on Gov. Arnold
Schwarzeneger

Like you, I salute the Governor for not standing in the way of a mandate that was long overdue.

When anyone gets treated as a second class citizen in this great country, we ALL are second class citizens.

After a very brave triumph that the governor did, I am shocked that he would step backwards and totally
distance himself from such progress in American one in which he was a part.

You see, our Founding Fathers would have been smiling, for certain, after the vote that made same-sex marriages ok in Ca.

One of the points they were trying to make, so strongly, when penning the Constitution, one that they were "running from" during the corrupt reign of England by the "First Church Of England" was that of the "pursuit of happiness" and "all men are created equal". That means "ALL" not just who you and I think are having "normal sex".

Given this, I happen to be straight. And, like any straight person, it might seem odd to me, that is, gay sex. But let's take that a step further. Doesn't my sexual preference (heterosexuality) seem odd to them? I would like to think so. Emotions such as love and sexual preference are not something people in power in a free democracy should even be talking about much less thinking.

The job as a governor is to make sure the budget is balanced in your state, keep the citizenry safe from harm, etc. Not who is sleeping with whom. That is what you do if you are in high power of Iran or the former Soviet Union, or dare I even say the Germany of the 1940's.

If you have personal opinions regarding straight vs. gay sex, fine. So do I. But you are a man in power, I am not. So don't abuse that power as people, a lot of people, listen to you.

Governor Schwarzeneger, you took so many steps forward by supporting this bill, and then with the swipe of a hand tried to distance yourself from it with a weird but predictable psychological ploy to make certain you "don't lose straight constituency".

Governor, you were born in a country (Austria) in which, at the time, if one was "different", they were second class citizens and (eventually brutally murdered). Hopefully you love and respect the words of our brilliant Constitution, to help maintain and enforce that that does not happen in our great country, the one you escaped to, to make a name for yourself, a name for yourself in the movie industry, where many who helped put you there and supported you were and are gay.

Finally, this is not a gay issue, it is an American issue. Do we want to strive to be the America that our Founding Fathers envisioned, or the America of "opinions of the powerful".

Any politician, salesperson, doctor, lawyer, or anyone else in any profession should consider this. Always put the shoe on the other foot and there is a reason.

Two decades ago, nobody would have
predicted an African-American would ever become president of the U.S. It appears this will probably happen.

And you can be rest-assured, one day, maybe in our lifetime, maybe not, a gay will become elected president. What if that gay president got on a Sunday morning program and said, "I feel that I can tolerate straight marriages, but really I only find gay marriages to be normal".

Would you feel comfortable and as a first class citizen living here? That is a rhetorical question as we both know the answer.

Sincerely,

RLS in
Arkansas
